The Iconic Merlion Statue of Singapore to be Demolished Soon

Merlion statue, which has been the mascot of Singapore for the past several decades, is reportedly seeing the last of its days. The decision to demolish the iconic structure has been made to make way for the S$90-million pedestrian bridge that will connect the islands of Sentosa and Pulau Brani. While the decision has shocked numerous people from all over the world, experts are of the belief that the move will help boost Sentosa’s appeal to tourists.

Iconic Merlion Statue of Singapore

The structure is scheduled to be demolished by the end of 2019, and the Setosa Sensoryscape project is expected to be completed by 2022. The bridge is planned to be a two-tiered path which will be the size of over five football fields. Numerous features such as look-out points, water features and other architectural structures will be a part of the bridge, adding to the delight of tourists.

Fun fact: The 8.6-metre Sentosa Merlion statue is one of the two such statues located in Merlion Park and one of the seven present in all of Singapore.
