Delhi airport unveils its plan for operations post lockdown

Although travel has come to a standstill amidst the lockdown, authorities have started working towards restarting operations after the lockdown is lifted and ensuring travellers’ safety amidst the outbreak. Delhi airport has recently released comprehensive guidelines and standard operating procedures for flyers and staff members for whenever the flight operations restarted. Here are the measures that will be taken to control the spread of the virus.

• All trolleys at the airport will be sanitised. A tunnel will be built and these trolleys will be run through the same before they are returned to their respective locations.
• All gates inside and outside terminals will feature markings to ensure that social distancing is practised by travellers at all times. Moreover, seating arrangements will also be managed in order to adhere to the social distancing
• In order to make sure that the virus does not spread through passengers’ baggage, all belongings of travellers’ will be passed through ultraviolet disinfection tunnels at departure as well as arrival points.
• As per the new system, check-in rows A to H along with entry gates 1 to 5 will be used for domestic operations, and check-in rows J, K, L and M with entry gates 6, 7 and 8 will be used for international flights.
• Visitors are prohibited in all terminals of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in order to fight against coronavirus.
• Numerous “touchpoints,” spots where staff and travellers might come directly into contact with others or through surfaces that could lead to the spread of COVID-19, have been identified. Various measures will be taken to minimise contact and potential transmission of infection at these hotspots.
• Guidelines for lounges, retailers, F&B and other vendors at airports have been established to ensure that social distancing norms are followed at every point.
• In addition to these, the airport is also discontinuing the ‘all gates, all airlines’ system, which was practised before lockdown. Rather, gates will be allocated to different airlines in an attempt to distribute passenger load and passengers travelling with one airline will not be permitted to use check-in row or entry gate allotted to another.

While these are the measures taken at IGI Airport in Delhi, similar action is expected to be taken at airports across India to ensure the minimum risk of catching infection among travellers.
