Places to Explore Culture During Teej Festival 2022 Celebrations

Haryali Teej, falling on 31st July 2022, is primarily celebrated by married women in the month of Sawan (of the Hindu calendar). The idea is to celebrate the onset of monsoon season. Prevalent in the some states of north India like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan; Harlitika Teej / Haryali Teej is celebrated on the third day after the full moon in the month of Shraavana/Sawan.

Green is the colour of Teej festival. With the onset of monsoons and the increasing in greenery in the environment, Teej is celebrated with great zeal. Being the colour of life, Teej signifies renewal, nature, and energy, is associated with meanings of growth, harmony, freshness, safety, fertility, and environment.  This festival is also celebrated to remember the union of Shiva and Parvati, the day when Shiva accepted Parvati as his wife.

What’s in for tourists during the Teej festival

Teej festival is a prominent cultural tradition of India. Tourists travelling to different parts of India during this festival will be able to observe and experience the essence of love and affection between husabnds and wives. Wives are on fasting during this entire day.

Rajasthan

The actual look & feel of this festival can be experienced in the pink city of Jaipur. The city witnesses a two-day procession. Bundi in Shekhawati region is another must visit during this festival.

Haryana

Celebrated widely across the state, Haryali Teej is one of the most famous festivals of Haryana. The Government of Haryana organises multiple functions welcoming this festival & the rainy season. Apart from just women; in Haryana men also engage in fun activities like flying kites.

Bihar & Jharkhand

In Bihar, women wear traditional clothes & jewellery and worship Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati. As a ritual, many women observe a ‘Nirjala’ fast where they don’t even consume water. Along with fasting, as a part of their puja, ladies also offer ‘Shringaar daan’ during their pooja which includes comb, ‘alta’, ‘sindoor’, henna, ‘bindi’, bangles & mirror.

Madhya Pradesh

Being an agriculturally rich state, Teej festival in MP is celebrated with great enthusiasm. It is celebrated in anticipation of a good harvest. The married women wear green coloured clothes, green bangles and decorate their hands with beautiful mehndi designs.

On this occasion, married women & young girls ride swings and sing songs to set-in the celebrations for this auspicious festival post which a community pooja is performed around the holy neem tree.

Significance of Ghewar During Teej

As delicacies are a part of most of the festivals and celebrations in India, there is also a significance of this honeycomb-shaped delicacy called Ghewar during the teej festival. For the married couples, this Ghewar dish is considered as a symbol of happiness and prosperity. Also, this dish is included to pray and wish for spouse’s long-life, good health of the children, and overall well-being of the family.
