The word Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit term ‘Krishnagiri’ (Krishna means black, and Giri means mountains). Another inscription in the caves depicts the Satavahana ruler Vashishtiputra Satakarni’s wedding to the daughter of Rudradaman I.
